Many club members enjoy the cut and thrust of competitive cycling in one or more of the many cycling disciplines. It is possible to compete at any level and age and the membership caters for those that wish simply to 'dabble' with racing to those who are serious athletes competing up to national level.
Our riders compete across the UK during the various cycling disciplines' different racing seasons - some thus effectively competing all year round - but the majority enjoy the summer racing season. While many of the club's members compete in events organised by other clubs under a variety of cycling governing bodies, the club also organises a range of events itself (click below for more details).
Events carry different classifications with different requirements for entry depending on the governing body under whose rules an event is organised. For example, some events require you to be a racing license holder of British Cycling in order to participate.
The tradition of the 'club time trial' series allows the easiest and most informal route for novices to try their hand at cycle sport and has been the way into the competitive side of the cycling for many of today's riders, right up to those competing professionally at the top of the sport. The club organises a series in this tradition of 21 events through the summer months and these are well supported by novice and serious racers alike.
Club Evening Time Trial Series
The club runs a series of short-distance time trials during the year once the evenings are light enough.
Guests from CTT-affiliated clubs are welcome, as are novices completely new to cycle sport who wish to try time-trialling for the first time. A temporary free club membership is available to allow novices to compete in this way.
Club Time Trial Series Medals will be awarded to every member who competes in the Club Time Trial Series and finishes in a minimum of EIGHT events.
The winners on points in each of the following Classifications will receive an engraved medal:
- Juvenile
- Junior
- Senior
- Veteran
- Lady
Medals will also be issued in accordance with club rules for riders reaching club standards in time trial events.
Championship Hill Climb
After the end of the time trial series the club holds a short distance hill climb event to determine the club champions in that discipline.
The winners in the following Classifications will each receive an engraved medal:
- Juvenile
- Junior
- Senior
- Veteran
- Lady

The Mountain Time Trial
The tradition of a time trial held over the tough and hilly terrain of North Wales stretches right back to 1946 and since 2002 Fibrax Wrexham Roads Club has been the latest in a long list of promoting clubs to run a Mountain Time Trial over the Horseshoe pass and the surrounding hills.
Club member Dave Davies has ridden the Mountain time trial nine times and has researched the fascinating history of event from its early beginnings after WW2 to the present day.
Over the years the course and distance have changed but the demands of the event have always produced high-quality and worthy winners. The roll of honour includes multi-national champions Dave 'Lloydy' Lloyd and Stuart Dangerfield, as well as former Milk Race winner Bill Nickson.
2009 saw another change of course with the distance increased from 24 to 32 miles, and a demanding profile as usual, over the new D32/2 course.
For details of the event, see the CTT website or club handbook.
The Horseshoe Pass Hillclimb
An Event which has become synonymous with Fibrax Wrexham Roads Club is the annual open hill climb which has been held each October over the last 28 years on the famous Horseshoe Pass, Llangollen.
The DHC/1 course covers a distance of 2 miles 585 yards with an 800 feet vertical height gain, starting at the Britannia Inn at the foot of the pass and finishing at the first lay-by at the summit.
Over the years its popularity has grown and it has attracted top riders from throughout the UK, with fields of 100+ being the norm, and riders finding this the ideal test to round off their racing season.
Many top names have graced this event over the years including Chris Boardman, Stuart Dangerfield, Jim Henderson, Mark Lovatt and James Dobbin, to name but a few.
The current course record stands at 9 minutes 3 seconds which was set by James Dobbin in 2007, a record he took from Stuart Dangerfield who had held it for a number of years with a ride of 9 minutes 4 seconds to take what was Chris Boardman's record of 9 minutes 7 seconds.
The organiser who was instrumental in promoting and raising the profile of this event was the late Terry Smith (Mr 'Hill Climb'), whose dedication and commitment was legendary. His incredible memory for riders' names and times enabled him to become expert in placing fields and all the other tasks to ensure the smooth running of this event over the years.
On many occasions the winning rider of this event has gone on to become the winner of the national hill climb, indicating the quality of the field attracted and the severity of the challenge.
For details of the events, see the CTT website or club handbook.
